That is to say, as much as it can be difficult to get your code to build and run correctly, it is manifestly harder to keep it working in the face of changing assumptions and requirements. This is true no matter the scale, from a small program to a shared library. Only two solutions have been shown to be theoretically sound: never change or provide no compatibility guarantees. What if there were a third option? What if we took the question of maintenance out of the realm of theory and moved it to practice? This talk discusses the approach we've used at Google and how that intersects with other languages, package management, API and ABI compatibility, and a host of other software engineering practices. The particulars of C++ as a language and an ecosystem make it well positioned for a different approach: Live at Head. — Titus Winters: Google, C++ Codebase Cultivator, NYC Titus Winters has spent the past 6 years working on Google's core C++ libraries. CREDIT: Freeform SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not watched “Prom,” the summer finale of “” which aired Sept. “'” summer finale opened with the continuation of the protest against a conservative speaker coming to a local college. Ximena (Lisseth Chavez) grabbed the megaphone in front of her peers and supporters, as well as police officers and those protesting against her group, and declared herself undocumented. While she had been shown all season to be a strong woman who was not hiding who she was, her public declaration pointed an arrow at the target already on her back. “She was standing up for what she believes is right: not to be afraid to speak, not to be afraid in general,” executive producer tells Variety. “Illegal immigrants have rights. They have civil rights, and they have the right to freedom of speech, and they have the right to peacefully protest. And they should know what their rights are. We wanted to show that she wasn’t afraid, and she wasn’t going to hide.”. The decision for Ximena to “come out” as undocumented so publicly came with repercussions, though, as ICE agents tracked her to her roller derby rink to bring her into custody. Ximena’s friend Callie (Maia Mitchell) covered for her, then helped her get get to a church that would grant her sanctuary. The episode ended with them, along with Callie’s ex-boyfriend AJ (Tom Williamson), behind the church’s doors, vowing to stay in there as long as it takes to get ICE off Ximena’s back. Related Obviously, the fight is far from over for Ximena, but also for Callie, who has been dating Aaron (Elliot Fletcher), a law student who surprised her — and viewers — when he announced a few episodes earlier that he wasn’t against the conservative speaker coming to campus in the first place. “He believes closer to what the ACLU believes, which is that if you don’t protect the right of people to express views that other people may find offensive, then when is it going to turn on you? He believes, what many people in this country believe, which is you have to protect both ways or you won’t protect anything at all,” Johnson explains. Whether or not Aaron will end up using his more intimate knowledge of the law to help Ximena remains to be seen when the second half of the season resumes early next year. Given the rough patch he and Callie experienced as a couple due to his fears she might cheat on him if he took a job that would take him out of Southern California for a few months, such a big gesture might be the thing he needs to do to re-solidify their connection. “I think that they are kindred spirits in some ways, but they’re both very stubborn and strong, and they both have fears of trust and intimacy,” Johnson says. “I think that’s why they bump heads at times. They each, for their own reasons, have a fear of being vulnerable, so that’s what bonds them, but it’s also what pulls them apart.” But Callie has made bigger strides this season toward figuring out who she is and learning to value herself first. (In the finale episode alone she finally thought of her future when fleeing from the protest just as it turned violent, and she also stood up for herself when she was referred to like “property” in her relationship.) To continue making such progress might result in her taking a break from relationships for a little while. “Callie is getting tired of dealing with jealousy and distrust when it comes from her relationships with boys,” Johnson says of the character’s future. “Callie does take two steps forward and one step back, and that’s going to be her journey for many, many years. You don’t just get over your trust issues or your intimacy issues quickly. She still has certain walls up, and she still tends to be defensive about certain things. But she will continue to look inside herself to learn about those things.”. And while the summer finale of “The Fosters” saw the return of fan favorite characters and Mariana’s (Cierra Ramirez) old flames Wyatt (Alex Saxon) and Mat (Jordan Rodrigues), the second half of the season will see Nick (Louis Hunter) back, too. As the students and school board struggle with whether to turn the local public high school into a charter academy, the kid who once held Mariana at gunpoint is claiming he can help keep the school open to all. He texted his ex as much in the finale, though the chaos of bigger events didn’t allow her to really follow up. Johnson says they “wouldn’t have him texting if he wasn’t going to come back into our world!” The political implications of him being back in the Adams-Fosters’ lives have the potential to be just as life-changing as the ICE storyline. “The Fosters” will return to Freeform with the second half of its fifth season in 2018. A vaguely sepulchral quality prevails at the Museo Atlántico, a group of sunken sculpture installations created by Jason deCaires Taylor, a British artist, diving instructor and underwater naturalist. They are populated by hundreds of human figures that rest off the coast of Morocco, in the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Island of Lanzarote. The undersea gathering, submerged at depths of 10 to 12 meters, was made from high-density, PH-neutral concrete, without metals or other corrosive materials, and is intended to have no negative impact on the marine ecosystem or the local flora and fauna. Indeed, the figures could become an artificial reef and breeding ground for marine life as they are colonized by corals, fish and other local species. A lot of people say “You make all these incredible sculptures and then you just throw them in the sea, and they’re lost and forgotten about.” I wanted to be able to change that and sort of bring to the public’s attention the fact that, actually, a sea floor is a precious place, a really sacred place, and we should aim to protect it and to cherish it. By putting artwork there, I think we sort of helped change that value system. It really shocked me just how quickly things developed. I think the marine biomass on the site has increased by 200 percent. We now have schools of thousands of sardines. We have rare angel sharks, butterfly rays. A whole chain of species has moved into an area that was barren two years ago. Big orange sponges have completely engulfed some of the sculptures. Various different species of algae have grown, some of which are really beautiful — red and green plants that move in the current. But the human figure is embedded in our psyche and so is recognizable no matter how much it changes. I think we empathize more with things we can see a part of ourselves in. I wanted that to connect us. The deep, underwater world seems like a completely alien place, completely divorced from ourselves. I wanted to be able to use the works to feel connected to the space. — Jason deCaires Taylor ‘Monument’. Watch BJ's 1 Mic 1 Take shot at the famous Capitol Studios here:. I don’t see myself as integrated. I don’t have to integrate. On this bus project I worked on many different layers. Dresden was totally bombed out in ’45, and a lot of people have forgotten how the city looked after the war. The buses also remind people who are living in wartime now that they also will get a chance to rebuild their cities. No war goes forever. It took Dresden a long time to rebuild many parts of the city, 72 years, and they’re still not finished. But the far right tried to categorize the work as this Arabian thing or this Islamist thing. While the installation was up, every Monday they always went to the buses and started shouting at the buses. It was funny to watch. The buses never moved. They were much stronger than the people who were shouting. I felt sometimes that it was like therapy for those people, because they’re not happy and they’re having problems and then they had this thing they could shout. And then they could go back home. — Manaf Halbouni ‘Sephirothic Flower: Diving Into the Unknown’. Makoto Azuma’s work places flowers and plants in hostile environments, eliciting a mix of emotions. Credit AMKK We rarely think about the deep sea, but this is where life originated. For this project, I wanted to juxtapose flowers, living creatures, with these dark, unknown depths. My home country of Japan, an island with advanced marine technology, was a natural choice for the location. We picked Suruga Bay because Japan’s deepest trench is found here. For three years, my team and I meticulously planned how to lower the arrangements and cameras into an extremely high-pressure environment. We partnered with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and performed experiments in pools. For the arrangements, I chose a variety of strong, vibrant flowers that would move gracefully with the ocean currents. When we were finally ready to shoot them, we went to five areas of the bay that ranged from 300 to 1,000 meters deep. Once we dropped the flowers, I was most amazed by how resilient they were. We encountered severe stormy weather on the first day, but the flowers did not break or get crushed. Instead, they flexibly changed shape and floated to the bottom of the ocean. Their colors looked even richer underwater. — Makoto Azuma. In 2017, year three, Longleaf received entries from eight countries and again accepted entries only through Film Freeway. New for this year: the festival increased its number of workshops, and added an off-site Wrap Party (cosponsored by Oak & Dagger Public House in Seaboard Station). A total of 60 films were shown on three screens at the museum in 12 film blocks. The afternoon of Friday, May 12, began with the first of four free workshops, “AV Geeks: From the Dumpster to Your Film in Three EZ Steps!” with Skip Elsheimer. That session was followed by two well-attended film blocks in Daniels Auditorium. The evening ended with Longleaf’s third annual opening-night reception for filmmakers and invited guests sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of History Associates. Saturday, May 13, included the following free workshops: • “Directing for the Actor/Acting for the Director” with Estes Tarver, • a lunch-n-learn panel, “Getting to Distribution” with featured guests Thomas Varnum and Ted Roach, and • “So You Want to Make a Movie” with Kim Best, Andrew Martin, and Vernon Rudolph. Six more film blocks in the museum’s education wing and four film blocks in Daniels Auditorium completed screenings for the day. Longleaf 2017 wrapped up with Steve Neilson, of Dagtype Films and a member of our Longleaf Advisory Board, hosting the annual awards ceremony. There, 47 films were recognized for having Tar Heel Tie-Ins and 15 other prizes. Judges for 2017 included three-time judges Craig Lindsey and Marsha Gordon and two-time judge Noel Manning. New for Longleaf 2017 were Jill Boinske, Marcianne Miller, Paolo Tosini, and Lawrence Toppman. We very much appreciate two lifetime sponsors: the North Carolina Museum of History Associates and the TriFilm Society. Second-year sponsor, J. Steel and Warrior Entertainment, also helped support the event, alongside new sponsors Asbury Shorts Film Concert, Dagtype Films, and the Cary Theater. During the free festival, more than 900 people attended, most enjoying a continuous supply of free popcorn. And, because we are history buffs, for the record we joined this year, which averaged 14.5k impressions weekly and at festival time had 395 followers. Social audiences also continued to support the festival on, with a weekly average reach of 1.3k—and, we started the year with 326 followers but ended with 563—and on, where we posted 204 images for 278 followers. I had avoided listening to this too much, waiting for the vinyl to actually ship and experience it that way. I only listened to it in my car. The remaster job is absolutely impeccable. Thought it was odd that this album needed a remaster but I'm truly blown away by how damn beautiful a job Trent did at it. Indeed, some of the more subtle layers are further brought out, but the quality itself is even more immaculate. The surface noise is one of the quietest in my collection with exception of some pops at the tail end of The Great Below leading into the run out groove. On a side note, as fantastic a pressing it is, there's some subtle, constant popping on Side D, particularly on The Way Out is Through. Dunno if it's the vinyl or part of the songs, cos there's some layers that are really brought out on some of these songs but dunno if the popping noises are part of the songs. Also, although I understand that the tracklist is staying true to its original vinyl release, I still really wish the Decay part of Ripe was added back on because that vinyl side could easily fit it on; I also kinda wish Ripe ended with a locked groove because that also really would have worked. My favorite album of all time! This pressing sounds fantastic, but is a tad lower quality than Broken, The Downward Spiral and Deviations 1. My copies of those 3 albums are all flawless. I've gone through two copies of The Fragile, because Sandbag damaged my first copy by shipping it poorly, and both copies of all 3 discs have a few flaws. Just some hiss and crackle during the quieter moments, and a few pops here and there. Nothing outrageous, but definitely noticeable compared to the other 3 flawless reissues. Still I highly HIGHLY recommend this to anyone looking to own this album on vinyl. When debuted The Fragile, the followup to his star-making some five years after that record’s release, comparisons to ’s go-to double album The Wall abounded. For one thing, Reznor tapped that record’s producer, Bob Ezrin, to help sequence from the chaotic collection of tracks he’d assembled. For another, both records were released at the turn of their respective decades, and could be seen as summary statements for much of the music of the ten years that preceded them. But the most direct point of comparison is the sheer scale of both recordings. No, not their length, but their height, if you will. Years of overfamiliarity might have dulled our appreciation for just how goddamn towering they both sound. The Wall’s two versions of its anthemic introductory track “In the Flesh” and ’s soaring solo on “Comfortably Numb” all but demand you look upward to see where the notes are coming from. Reznor and his collaborators—most notably producer Alan Moulder and guest guitarist —similarly made The Fragile’s songs sound like vertical constructions, piling element on element, often with dizzying rapidity. And in its newly remastered and rereleased incarnation, The Fragile (2017 Definitive Edition), the record scrapes the sky like never before. “The Fragile” and “Just Like You Imagined,” highlights of the album’s first disc (thinking it of a CD is a hard habit to break after nearly twenty years), are two of The Fragile’s most effective moments in this regard. Shambling into existence with a slow, steady drum beat that sounds like rattling chains, the title track works its way through three iterations of its chorus, the sole lyric of which is the disarmingly direct promise “I won’t let you fall apart”: first softly, near the bottom of Reznor’s vocal register; then at an ear-splitting, double-tracked shout, accompanied by cinematic synths; and finally with multi-tracked, major-key harmonies that turn the phrase into something close to a prayer. “Just Like You Imagined,” arguably Reznor’s finest moment as a composer, picks up where “The Fragile” leaves off, using that same celestial-chorus harmony construction and prominent cameos from sidemen Mike Garson on piano and Belew on guitar to create a wordless epic, spiraling upward in volume and intensity. Which is not to say that The Fragile is all lacerating art-rock bombast. On the -assisted “Even Deeper” and the late-album high point “The Big Comedown,” Reznor crafts a methodical industrial robo-funk that evokes deep-sea sonar pings and a malfunctioning robot, respectively. “Into the Void,” a direct reference, juxtaposes the very sentiment “Tried to save myself but my self keeps slipping away” with very un-NIN “ooh-wah-ah-ah” backing vocals. |
